Conservation Commission
Leverett Pond
The purpose of the Conservation Commission is to protect Leverett’s wetland resource areas in accordance with the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and supporting regulations.
The protected resource areas include rivers, streams, brooks, ponds, vernal pools, wetlands and flood plains. Protection extends 100 feet from the edge of the wetlands, 200 feet from rivers and most brooks and streams and to the entire flood plain.
It is illegal for anyone in Leverett to dredge, fill, modify or alter any of these resource areas without first filing for and receiving a permit from the Conservation Commission to do so.
Anyone whose property is within 100 feet of a wetland or within 200 feet of a perennial brook stream or river and who wishes to build, grade, clear, or do any work that would alter the resource area must contact the Conservation Commission before doing so.
Any work permitted by the Board of Health such as repair or construction of disposal systems or wells which fall within a resource area must also receive a permit from the Conservation Commission.
Applications for building permits which require the signature of the Conservation Commission must either demonstrate that the work to be done is not within a resource area or file under the Wetlands Protection Act. Wetlands Protection Act regulations and forms are available on the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection web site.
The Conservation Commission normally meets the first Monday of each
month at Town Hall. New office hours starting Jan 27, 2012 are Fridays
from 10:30am to 2:30pm. Applications for permits under the Wetlands
Protection Act must be received two weeks prior to the meeting to
allow time for site visits and the required newspaper advertisement.
If you need to schedule a site visit, building permit signoffs, or
have any question regarding the Wetlands Protection Act please contact
the Conservation Commission Agent, Walter Ramsey at 413-548-1022 X3,
or email concom@leverett.ma.us. Please allow up to one week for
response to your questions.
